Paul Wolfowitz was named deputy secretary of defense by President-elect George W. Bush. Wolfowitz, a Jew who was undersecretary of defense in the administration of Bush’s father and is currently dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, was an adviser to the Bush campaign and had been a leading candidate for secretary of defense, a post that went to Donald Rumsfeld.
