Peace reigned anew over the fresh water fish battleground at Peck Slip yesterday, and Jewish housewives were enabled to buy their fish in time for the second Passover holidays which began last night.
At three o’clock yesterday morning the retail dealers began buying their fish supplies at the Slip, after a midnight conference between wholesalers and retailers which followed a meeting at the Astoria Mansion, 62 East Fourth street. Thus ended a three-day period of striking, rioting and general ill-feeling.
The strike was settled upon the lines laid down by the retailers, through their organization, the United Retail Fish Dealers Association, headed by Sol Walpow. The prices agreed upon were those of the ill-fated compromise agreement of last Wednesday. “We couldn’t do anything else” seemed to be the general attitude of wholesalers yesterday. It was estimated that the wholesale dealers had lost between fifty and sixty thousand dollars during the three-day stoppage.
Meanwhile, Stanley Osserman, counsel for the wholesalers, was still in Washington yesterday, conferring with NRA officials on a code for the industry.
