Israeli Arab political leaders and several leftwing Jewish Knesset members joined in a peaceful demonstration here yesterday to protest the government’s ban of an “Arab Congress” that was to have taken place in Nazareth yesterday.
The demonstration, held in a local theater, heard Meir Payil of the Sheli faction call the ban “stupid and wicked.” Communist MK Meir Wilner noted that many Jews and Arabs in Israel believe that a separate Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza Strip would provide a peaceful solution of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
Parallel protest rallies were held in several Arab villages in Galilee. All were peaceful and the Arab populated areas of Israel were reported quiet yesterday in contrast to the rioting on the West Bank.
