Transport Minister Shimon Peres warned today that any Libyan attempt to attack an Israeli airliner in retaliation for the downing of a Libyan Boeing 727 over the Sinai last Wednesday would “constitute a most serious provocation.” Peres said that Israel was “taking all essential steps necessary to defend the aircraft of our national airline and to safeguard international air links with Israel.”
Peres made his remarks at Lod Airport where he came to say goodbye to the Danish Minister of Transport, Jans Kampfman, who left today after a brief visit to Israel. Referring to the Sinai tragedy, Kampfman said that nay airline pilot of a civilian aircraft who is instructed to land after penetrating another country’s territory is obliged to carry out the instructions without hesitation.
