The United States would be willing to send troops to the Golan Heights to help Israel and Syria implement a peace deal, U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry said this week during a visit here.
“The peace agreement between Israel and Syria is what we hope and believe will happen,” Perry said.
If an agreement “calls for a peace monitoring force in the Golan Heights, and if both Israel and Syria request the United States to participate in that, we are prepared to do that,” he said.
Perry made the remarks after talks Monday with Prime Minister Shimon Peres.
Perry also announced that the United State would continue cooperating with Israel in developing the Arrow anti-missile. Pending approval by the Congress, the United States would finance $200 million of the $500 million project over the next five years.
