Philadelphia Jew Bequeathes $357,000 to Hebrew Union College-j. I. R.

A $357,000 bequest to the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion from the estate of the late Sidney Neumann of Philadelphia was announced here today by Dr. Nelson Glueck, president, at a meeting of the Board of Governors of the HUC-JIR.

Of this amount, $223,250 is a direct gift to the school and $133,950 goes to the American Jewish Archives, a College-Institute department specializing in the collection, preservation and publication of Jewish Americana. Mr. Neumann, a Philadelphia bachelor, died Feb. 5, 1957 at the age of 79. The College-Institute is using both funds for scholarly publications, Dr. Glueck said. Robert P. Goldman, Cincinnati lawyer and civic leader, was elected chairman of the Board of Governors.
