An exhibition commemorating the tercentenary of Jewish settlement in America was opened here this week-end at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The exhibition, which will last a month, is co-sponsored by the American Jewish Historical Society, which concluded a two-day annual meeting yesterday at Dropsie College here.
The chief emphasis of the Jewish historical group’s meeting was on the role of the early Jewish settlers in this country. The tercentenary, to be celebrated throughout the country this year, marks the settlement in New York in 1654 of 23 Jewish refugees from Brazil.
Dr. Salo W. Baron, Professor of Jewish History, Literature and Institutions at Columbia University, was elected president of the society, succeeding Dr. Lee M. Friedman, who was named honorary president.
