The campaign of the United Palestine Appeal in Philadelphia came to a successful close Wednesday night. Twelve hundred men and women workers who were engaged in the campaign, raised a total aggregating $385,000 which is $10,000 over the original quota set for the city.
The quota for this year represents the largest amount ever asked for Palestine in Philadelphia.
The closing dinner which took place in the Auditorium of the Y. M. H. A. was in the nature of a testimonial to Judge William M. Lewis in recognition of the services he has rendered. Hon. Leopold C. Glass was chairman of the banquet and Rabbi Marvin of the Beth Israel Temple was the principal speaker.
A check for $125,000 was forwarded to the New York office of the United Palestine Appeal by the Philadelphia branch. The check represents collections in the campaign here, as well as collections from a number of the smaller cities in Region No. 4 of the Palestine Foundation Fund.
Announcement was made by the national headquarters of the United Palestine Appeal that the following cities have thus far made cash remittance in response to the call of the Appeal headquarters for $1,000,000 cash remittances during May: New York City, $75,000; New England Region, $30,000; Detroit (second remittance) $25,000; Washington, $15,000; Baltimore, $12,500; St. Louis, $7,500; Jersey City, $5,000; St. Louis, $5,000; Youngstown, $5,000; Cleveland, $4,000; Syracuse, $4,500; Binghamton, $3,500; Buffalo, $2,000; Chattanooga, $1,000 and Atlanta, $1,000.
About $10,000 was received in smaller amounts from Cincinnati, O.; Canton, O.; Memphis, Tenn.; Plainfield, N. J., Englewood, N. J.; Hudson, N. Y.; Augusta, Ga.; St. Petersburg, Fla.; Utica. N. Y.
