Only one of three Phoenix area elementary school units revamped its opening week schedule to provide for a conflict with Rosh Hashanah services, despite a plea from Rabbi Albert Plotkin of Temple Beth Israel here, on behalf of the Phoenix Jewish Community Relations Council. One of the two districts which refused to make the change did so despite a personal plea by one of the district’s trustees, Rabbi A.L. Krohn, rabbi emeritus of Temple Beth Israel.
The one district which made the change altered its schedule, which had called for registration on the first day of the holiday, to permit registration all week long. The other districts told Rabbi Plotkin that while they could not go along with a schedule change, they would arrange that no Jewish pupil be marked absent for failure to attend school on Rosh Hashanah. The two districts which refused to act were sharply criticized in an editorial in the “Phoenix Jewish News” which called their lack of action “unreasonable.”
