A telephone service for a Bridgeport Nazi group offering recorded anti-Semitic and anti-Black messages was terminated yesterday, according to an announcement by the New England Telephone Co.
The utility previously had taken the position that it could not terminate the service without being ordered to do so by the State Public Utilities Commission, which had received many complaints. The commission said that without prosecution of “an appropriate report” to the telephone company that such use of its service was unlawful, it could not order termination of the service. In response to a complaint by Attorney General Robert Killian, the Police Department of Bridgeport, where the National Socialist White People’s Party has its office, informed the utility that the department had determined that the Nazi Party was using the telephone service “in violation of the law” and asked that it be stopped.
