Pickets bearing signs protesting the sale of German-made merchandise paraded before Charles I. Silberman’s Hardware Store Co. , Inc. , 27 Ludlow street, and the Terminal Hosiery Co. establishment at Broadway and Thirty-fourth street yesterday afternoon.
“A roughneck, who said he was a member of the Anti-Nazi Minute Men, came into my store a few days ago,” Silberman said, “and accused me of having received a $1,000 shipment of hardware from Germany.
“I told him I buy all my goods from jobbers here, and any purchases I’ve made in the last two years have carried Japan or Sweden labels.
“I admitted I have about $100 worth of old German stock on my shelves, but I can’t afford to throw it out.
“The roughneck called me a liar. I ordered him out of my store. The picketing has been orderly and business has never been better. “
David Levy, president of the Terminal Hosiery Co. , admitted his firm is selling Nazi-manufactured women’s gloves.
“I’m not in a position right now to discontinue my German stock,” he said. He would not explain further.
