President Augusto Pinochet Ugarte of Chile extended New Year’s greetings to the Jewish community on behalf of his government and himself. In a letter to Gil Sinay, president of the Representative Committee of the Jewish Communities of Chile, Pinochet stated:
“On the occasion of the celebration of the Jewish New Year 5741 and the next 19th of September, the ‘Day of Pardon’ (Yom Kippur), I want to bring you and through your distinguished mediation, to all the Jewish community, the cordial greetings of the government which I preside as well as my own. I take the opportunity to express to the Jewish community my appreciation for their continual contribution to the progress of the country. “
