Pious Jews of the Vilna district who were auxious to visit the old Jewish cemetery in Ligmjany, in accordance with time-honored local custom, were prevented from doing so by the Lithuanian frontier authorities.
The cemetery lies on the Polish-Lithuanian fronter and custom calls for visiting the cemetery on Tisha B’ab and Gedaliah’s Fast Day, which occurred yesterday, Monday, September 17. The frontier authorities drove back all Jews who attempted to cross the border to the cemetery, declaring “visiting the cemetery on Tisha B’ab is sufficient.”
