Governor-elect David L. Lawrence has announced appointment of Judge Anne X. Alpern of Pittsburgh as Attorney-General of Pennsylvania, the first woman ever to be named to that cabinet post in the State’s history.

Judge Alpern, who is active in Pittsburgh Jewish communal affairs and has served on the advisory board of the Pittsburgh Jewish Outlook, will resign from the Common Pleas Court to which she was elected in 1954. She will take office as Attorney General on Jan. 20.

In announcing Judge Alpern’s appointment, the Governor-elect described her as having “exceptionally high qualifications” for the post. He added that “I am indeed pleased that she will serve as chief legal officer of the State as she did for the city of Pittsburgh for many years.”
