The Security Council was scheduled to meet this afternoon to discuss a plan to increase the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) by 1,000 troops, bringing the total force to 7,000 soldiers. A vote on the plan is expected to take place tomorrow.
The increase in the number of troops which monitor the peace in south Lebanon was already approved by Israel and Lebanon, sources here said. According to the sources, the beefing up of UN forces in south Lebanon might help calm down the tense situation which developed in the area recently.
