The establishment of a Jewish-owned steamship line between New York and Haifa is expected to be completed by May 15, the date of the termination of Britain’s mandate in Palestine, Moshe Pomrok, an official of the Palestine Maritime league, announced today.
Pomrok said he had been conducting negotiations here for the past five months on plans to purchase and operate 18 passenger and cargo vessels which would serve the Jewish state in Palestine. He said the plan has the backing of the Jewish Agency and the Histadruth. “More than $24,000,000 could be gained annually for Palestine if it developed its own merchant marine, “Pomrok said.
