Plans for combatting anti-Semitism in Europe and for ##ttering relations between Christians and Jews were outlined here today at a conference arranged by James N. Rosenberg, a member of the executive board of the American National Conference of Christians and Jews.Principal speaker at the meeting, which was attended by prominent Christian and Jewish laymen, was Dr. Everett Clinchy, president of the National Conference, who, together with Mr. Rosenberg, arrived in England to confer on inter-faith matters with communal leaders here, as well as in France and other countries. Dr. Clinchy is leaving for Germany next week at the invitation of Gen. Lucius D. Clay, U.S. commander there.
The participants in the conference included representatives of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, Lord Reading, Sir Robert Waley-Cohen, Leonard Stein, Neville Laski, Leonard Montefiore, and other leading figures in ##, law and religion. Representatives of the American and Swedish embassies were also present.
Mr. Rosenberg expressed the hope that Dr. Clinchy’s meetings with Gen. Clay and with notables in Switzerland, France and Italy will “energize the efforts of the International Council of Christians and Jews,” formed early this year. Recalling his visit to London 26 years ago, as European head of the JDC, Mr. Rosenberg said that we then thought that great problems confronted us. They were trifles contrasted with the overwhelming duties challenging the JDC now.” He stressed the necessity or all-out support of the United Jewish Appeal.
