The Polish Government was reported today to be preparing to liquidate within a few weeks border camp at Szbonszyn where 5,000 Polish Jews deported from Germany are interned. This development came after the intervention of Chief Rabbi Moses Schorr with the Foreign Ministry. It was believed that the Government would permit all refugees having relatives and friends in Poland to join them. The authorities were also believed to be inclined to permit relatives of the deportees still remaining in the Reich to come to Poland.
Negotiations regarding the transfer of Polish Jews’ property from Germany will be resumed shortly, with the Polish Government seeking to obtain from Berlin a settlement favorable to the deportees. The German Government, it is believed, will permit a large number of the refugees to return to the Reich temporarily to liquidate their businesses.
Meanwhile, $5,000 daily is being spent for the upkeep of the refugees at Szbonszyn and elsewhere. Although $200,000 was collected in Poland since October, the funds are nearly exhausted. The Jewish Relief Committee is launching a $600,000 drive to finance a program of constructive aid for the deportees.
