Poland’s leading Catholic clergyman called on radical religious groups to stop erecting crosses at the site of the Auschwitz death camp. Cardinal Josef Glemp issued the call after fringe Catholic groups, backed by hard-line priests, ignored Jewish protests.and set up some 90 crosses at the site. Meanwhile, six Jewish members of the U.S. Congress sent a letter to the Polish prime minister, Jerzy Buzek, calling on him to have the crosses removed.
