Poland’s prime minister paid tribute to the “heroic struggle” of the Warsaw Ghetto fighters who rose up against the Nazis 57 years ago this month in the first instance of mass armed resistance in Nazi-occupied Polish territory. “They openly defied the butchers of Treblinka, Belzec, Sobibor, Chelmno, Majdanek and Auschwitz-Birkenau,” Jerzy Buzek said in a statement coinciding with the anniversary of the uprising.
