Israeli police fought mobs of Israeli youths who tried today to storm this seaport town’s old walled Arab section. Showered by stones from Arab and Jewish youth, three policemen and four civilians were injured. Tension has mounted steadily since six Acre Arabs confessed to bombing Haifa apartment houses last month, killing two and wounding 16. Anger flamed among Jews when a car carrying explosives blew up today near here, killing two Arabs. Some 40 Israelis were reported arrested during three attempts to break into the Arab sector since Saturday. Arab youths counter attacked twice. Arab and Jews have lived peacefully side by side here since 1948. Leaders of both communities issued urgent appeals to both sides to keep cool.
