Police detonated explosives Thursday at a site near the former Auschwitz death camp and detained a radical Roman Catholic staging a sit-in to protect crosses erected near the site. Kazimierz Switon said earlier in the day that he had mined the site to deter government attempts to remove him. Switon has led a campaign during the past year to erect hundreds of crosses near Auschwitz.
