It was reported today without official confirmation that approximately 200 of the city’s 18,000 uniformed policemen had acknowledged membership in the Christian Front in response to Commissioner Lewis J. Valentine’s questionnaire. Other sources reportedly put the figure at 1,000.
It was said that only two of the city’s 1,000 detectives had given affirmative answers to the questionnaire distributed at the behest of Mayor LaGuardia asking police whether they were members of the Front or other subversive organizations.
Some of the policemen said they still were members of the Front, while others said they had relinquished membership. The number in each category was not known.
