Police in Sydney made a night raid on the headquarters of the Australian National Socialist Party, and arrested five of the neo-Nazis. The police also seized weapons, explosives and a variety of Nazi emblems and insignia.
Those arrested included the leader of the movement, Arthur Smith, The raid was the first police action since Australia was stirred into debate by a national television showing of a meeting of the neo-Nazis in their headquarters in Ashfield, a Sydney suburb.
When the police made the raid, they found that 15 members were attending a meeting. They wore Nazi uniforms with swastika emblems, and were shouting “Sieg Heil.” Police took possession of property at the headquarters alleged to have been stolen by the Nazis. They continued to question the arrested members.
