Police officials here have recommended that Likud Knesset member Meir Sheetrit be brought to trial on charges of fraud and breach of trust resulting from alleged activities while he was treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Israel.
The police’s National Investigations Unit recently completed its investigation into Sheetrit, who is suspected of using Jewish Agency credit cards for his personal use. Sheetrit was the agency’s treasurer from 1988 to 1992
The police file on Sheetrit has been submitted to the state prosecutor, who will make a final decision on the matter.
The investigation of Sheetrit began 18 months ago, after evidence was uncovered against him during a separate investigation into the activities of former Jewish Agency chairman Simcha Dinitz.
Dinitz is currently on trial on charges of aggravated fraud and abuse of public trust for his alleged misuse of Jewish Agency-issued credit cards.
“I am not surprised,” Sheetrit said, responding to the police recommendation that he be put on trial.
“As I have said in the past, the police decided from the start to put me on trial,” he said.
