The homes of all employes of the Jewish Colonization Association in Turkey were searched by police last night as a result of a raid made on the headquarters of the association last week.
During the raid, the police arrested M. Tcherniak, director of the association’s local office, and confiscated all records of the organization. No reason for the raid and the arrest was given.
An effort was made today by representatives of the Jewish Community here to communicate with Tcherniak in jail. The authorities refused them permission to see the prisoner or communicate with him. Tcherniak is being held incommunicado, it was explained.
It is believed here that the Jewish Colonization Association’s main office in Paris will intervene through French diplomatic channels for an inquiry into the situation. The association had been active in Turkey for many years under the old regime as well as under the regime of Kemal Pasha, and its work was devoted exclusively to helping Jewish emigration and Jewish land settlement.
