Any attempt by Hitler henchmen to unfurl a Swastika banner or to stage any other Nazi demonstration on October 5 in connection with the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of Germantown, a suburb of Philadelphia, now in preparation here, will be promptly checked by the police, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety declared today.
Since the decision of a number of German American Societies fittingly to observe this anniversary of the founding of Germantown, many efforts have been made by the Hitler cohorts here to utilize the occasion for the spread of Nazi propaganda. This has led to serious friction among the leaders of the movement, the majority being opposed to Hitler and his tactics. The Nazi enthusiasts are making a desperate attempt to capture the celebration.
Reports that Governor Pinchot, who has been invited to attend, has refused to take any part in the celebration, could not be confirmed. It is said, although it is not confirmed here, that President Roosevelt has also refused an invitation to attend. Unless they are assured of the noninterference of the Hitler followers, the leaders of the movement may abandon the project.
