Polish Catholic fundamentalists erected religious plaques on some 240 crosses they erected earlier this year at a site near the former Auschwitz concentration camp. The plaques were added to indicate where the “faithful should gather,” said Kazimierz Switon, the self-appointed leader of the campaign to erect the crosses. The Polish government last month lost a court bid to take over the site of the crosses, which have been criticized by Jewish groups and the Polish Catholic Church.
