The Association of the Municipalities in Poland today joined hands with the Jews in a complaint that the government is overburdening city residents with taxes.

Supporting the Jewish complaint, the Association of the Municipalities today submitted to the government a memorandum emphasizing the fact that the taxation on city dwellers and on those living in towns is disproportionate. This unequal proportion is discrimination in favor of the rural population, which though composing the largest proportion of the country’s population, pays insignificant taxes, the association points out.

The association demands in its memorandum that the government relieve the cities from the burden of overtaxation and revise their taxation method.

The Jewish press in Poland hails this action by the municipalities Jewish deputies have on many occasions pointed out in the Polish Parliament that the Jewish population, being a city population, is ruined by the present taxation system, and that the Jews, though composing only ten per cent of the entire population, are contributing as much as forty per cent to the government budget, simply because they are heavily taxed as a city element.

Jewish trade and commerce in Poland has been on the decline, especially during the last year, in view of the fact that the heavy taxes make it impossible for Jewish firms to continue in existence. Jewish artisans and employes are also severely affected by the present taxation system, the aim of which is to put the entire burden of the government budget on the city population.
