Joseph Zemian, an engineer and author of “The Cigarette Sellers,” a book about Jewish children in Warsaw under the Nazis, died Saturday at the age of 48. Zemian, who was born in Warsaw and lived there during the ghetto period, was a member of the underground and saved many Jews. Among the mourners of his death were now-grown-up Poles who survived the era in which as children they peddled cigarettes in Warsaw.
