A delegation of the American Jewish Committee, headed by Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, President, was received here today by Polish Foreign Minister Wincenty Rzymowski, and discussed with him the position of the Jews in Poland.
The Minister assured the delegation that the Polish Government is doing all it can to suppress anti-Jewish excesses in Poland. He added that the Polish Government is still not strong enough to insure the security of all its citizens, Jews and non-Jews, and pointed to the fact that a law against anti-Semitic agitation has just been adopted by the Government. He also stressed the fact that for the first time there are Jewish ministers in the Polish Government.
Speaking of the repatriation of Polish Jews from the USSR, Mr. Rzymowski said that all Polish citizens are being permitted by the Soviet authorities to return to their native land. So far, he declared, few have returned, but of those who did come back, fifty percent are Jews. The Minister also assured the delegation that the Government of Poland is in favor of complete freedom of emigration for Jews or non-Jews.
He told the delegation that he will be glad to issue visas to any representatives of the American Jewish Committee who might wish to come to Poland to study the Jewish situation there. The delegation included Edward Norman, vice-chariman of the overseas section of the American Jewish Committee, and Simon Segal, acting director of the foreign affairs department.
