The Polish Government has suggested to the Joint Distribution Committee here that it wind up its activities, it was reported today. William Bein, J.D.C. director in Poland, who received the government’s official communication, said that no time limit on the J.D.C.’s shut-down was given.
The official communication from the Minister for Public Administration pointed out that the closing down of the J.D.C. headquarters here was advisable since welfare institutions maintained by Jewish organizations are being taken over by the Polish Government, with their budgets covered by various Ministries. Mr. Bein stated that he was consulting with various Jewish organizations in Poland on problems arising from the projected closing of the J.D.C. office.
The OSE, Jewish health society, which is known in Poland as the “TOZ,” will suspend its activities at the end of this year, it was announced here. Employees of the organization have already received their discharge notices, effective Dec. 31. The J.D.C.-equipped hospital maintained by the OSE in Walbrzych, named for the late U.D.C. representative David Guzik, has already been taken over by the government.
