MORE THAN 3,000,000 POLISH JEWS AND SEVERAL THOUSAND CHRISTIAN WORKERS SUSPENDED ALL ACTIVITIES FOR HALF A DAY TODAY IN PROTEST AGAINST GOVERNMENT-SANCTIONED SEGREGATION OF JEWISH STUDENTS IN WARSAW UNIVERSITIES.
POLICE ARRESTED 200 PERSONS IN CONNECTION WITH THE DEMONSTRATION. THE MAJORITY WERE RELEASED, BUT THE REMAINDER WILL BE PROSECUTED. IN LODZ, FOUR JEWISH DEMONSTRATORS WERE SENTENCED BY AN ADMINISTRATIVE COURT TO PRISON TERMS OF SIX WEEKS EACH.
THE STRIKE, DECLARED BY LEADERS TO BE THE MOST EFFECTIVE EVER STAGED BY POLISH JEWRY AGAINST ANTI-SEMITISM, RESULTED IN COMPLETE SHUTDOWN OF ALL JEWISH SHOPS, FACTORIES, BANKS, OFFICES, CAFES AND RESTAURANTS. POLISH CHRISTIAN WORKERS EMPLOYED IN MANY FACTORIES HAVING MIXED PERSONNEL JOINED THE JEWISH STRIKERS.
JEWISH SCHOOL CHILDREN, UNDER ADVICE OF THE UNION OF JEWISH PARENTS, ABSTAINED FROM CLASSES IN THE MORNING. WORK WAS SUSPENDED BY ALL JEWISH COMMUNAL ORGANIZATIONS. EVEN FUNERALS WERE POSTPONED UNTIL THE AFTERNOON.
A SCORE OF JEWISH YOUTHS WERE ARRESTED HERE FOR PARTICIPATING IN SPONTANEOUS STREET DEMONSTRATIONS AND DISTRIBUTING LEAFLETS. POLICE DISPERSED THE DEMONSTRATORS.
OVERFLOW MEETINGS WERE HELD IN WARSAW AND OTHER LARGE CITIES. THEY ADOPTED RESOLUTIONS DEMANDING FULL CITIZENSHIP RIGHTS FOR JEWS AND ABOLITION OF THE “GHETTO” MEASURES.
