The nomination of Marjan Zindram Koscialkowski, mayor of Warsaw, as minister of the Interior, was hailed with great satisfaction by Polish Jewry. The minister to-be, was formerly mayor of Bialystok, which has a large Jewish population.
He has suppressed Nara attacks on Jews ruthlessly. As mayor of Warsaw he issued an appeal to the population asking them not to be misled by Nara propaganda.
He is regarded as a staunch supporter of Marshal Pilsudski.
MARRIED TO JEWESS
The new Minister of the Interior is married to a Jewish woman, the former Regina Wollach of Bialystok, the daughter of a Jewish druggist. When his father-in-law died in 1931, and was to be buried in the Warsaw cemetery, Koscialkowski, then district governor of Bialystok, attended the funeral services, asking his Jewish friends how to comport himself in consonance with the Jewish ritual.
During his term of office Koscialkowski acquired general and Jewish esteem for his judicial, nonpartisan attitude toward the entire population. He dealt in a friendly manner with Jewish affairs. There were no anti-Jewish excesses during his term of office in Bialystok.
HOPEFUL OF ORDER
Polish Jews are hopeful that his administration of the ministry of the interior will result in the return of order to Poland and the suppression of the anti-Jewish attacks of recent months.
Koscialkowski, who belongs to the liberal section of Marshal Pilsudski’s government party, is known as a man of firm principles.
