The existence of hundreds of Jewish bus owners and drivers is threatened by a new order issued today by the Polish government introducing a government bus concession system.
Most of the Warsaw bus lines are already under the control of three large companies of the state bus system. Beginning June 1, all private bus owners will be forbidden to ply their customary routes.
Efforts are being made by Jewish communal officials to secure licenses for at least some of the Jewish bus owners who are to be prohibited from carrying on their occupation.
Under the concession system the Polish government will sell a monopoly on the right to the bus traffic to the highest or most favored bidder.
Bitter experience of the Polish Jews has proven that the Jews are seldom able to win the concessions.
