Leon Dulzin showed a marked edge over Yosef Almogi as the man Israelis want to see heading the Jewish Agency, according to a public opinion poll conducted in mid-October by the Institute for Applied Social Research in Jerusalem. But the poll also showed that one-third of Israelis have no opinion at all on the Agency chairmanship election, now being vigorously contested by the two men. Dulzin is acting chairman of the Jewish Agency and World Zionist Organization Executives, Almogi, the Mayor of Haifa, has been nominated for the dual office by the Labor Party.
Thirty-nine percent of those asked thought Dulzin would be “better” for the job; 17 percent thought Almogi would be “better”; and eight percent thought they were equally suited, Thirty-five percent had no opinion, in answer to another question, 41 percent thought Dulzin was “more experienced and more acceptable to diaspora Jews”; 14 percent favored Almogi on those grounds; 11 percent felt they were equal, and 33 percent were “don’t knows.”
A substantial majority of those asked were opposed to the idea that the chairmanship was a fiefdom of the party in power. The two previous chairman, the late Louis Pincus and the late Pinchas Sapir were members of the Labor Party Dulzin is a leader of Likud.”
