Pope Paul IV made a “pressing appeal” yesterday for a negotiated settlement of the conflicts in the Middle East and in Indo-China. The Pontiff, in an address to a meeting of Cardinals and Bishops, declared that increased military commitments by the great powers in the Middle East and Southeast Asia had brought about threats, of “unforeseeable broader developments.” The Pontiff added that “the peoples who are directly involved and on whose behalf the wars are being fought seem to count less and less.”
