A group of high-ranking Catholic church officials who have been visiting Jerusalem suggested to Israel and Transjordan authorities that a simple solution to their communications problems during the Vatican-proclaimed Holy Year in 1950 would be issuance of “Pontifical Travel Documents” for pilgrims, permitting free movement across the Israel and Arab lines, it was reported here today.
It was pointed out that such papers would eliminate “fear of infiltration of undesired elements disguised as pilgrims and would also satisfy Transjordan’s reluctance to recognize Israel.”
(A dispatch to the New York Times form Jerusalem reported that Latin Patriarchal Vicar Father Terrence Kuehn, top-ranking Catholic clergyman in southern Israel, told Roman Catholic institutions in Jerusalem not to cooperate with the Israel Government in preparations to accommodate pilgrims next year.)
