A Rome dispatch to the New York Times reported today that Pope Pius spoke “burning words” on the question of religious persecution during his talk with Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop on Monday and “also came to the defense of the Jews in Germany and Poland.” The dispatch added that all authorities were agreed that “crux of the whole interview was the Pope’s insistence that there could be no peace until Germany had righted the injustice she had done.”
