The Bavarian fortress of Landsberg, in which Hitler wrote Mein Kampf during his imprisonment following the abortive Nazi putsch of 1923, has been converted into the first slaughterhouse for kosher beef in Germany, Rabbi Alexander S. Rosenberg, of New York, a JDC representative in Germany, reported today.
Rabbi Rosenberg, who has just returned to Paris for a brief visit after a three-wook tour of displaced persons camps for Jews in the American occupation zone in Germany, said that the entire cattle supply in the Landsberg district is slaughtered in the fortress and, therefore, the Germans living in the surrounding area are also eating kosher meat.
During his tour of the Feldafing, Ferienwald and Zielshei camps, Rabbi Rosenberg said, he found that the moral and material conditions of the Jews were “difficult,” but he expressed the hope that a full-scale relief program for them can be launched shortly. All the Jewish camps now have kosher kitchens, religious schools and synagogues, he disclosed, but there is a great need for religious books and other items.
He reported that several schools for boys and girls have been set up in the Jewish camps, with teachers recruited from members of the rabbinate and former members of the staff of the Beth Jacob schools for girls, which functioned in pre-war Poland. The educational program in the camps, the JDC aide said, is aimed at training the young people for agricultural pursuits.
