Rev. A. J. C. Bond, pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, Plainfield, N. J., appeared on behalf of the Seventh Day Baptists as the second witness before the House Foreign Affairs Committee at its hearing yesterday, opposing the proposed change in the calendar.
In an impressive speech, Rev. Bond pointed out that the proposed change would infringe upon the Seventh Day Baptists Sabbath, which is observed on Saturday, the same day as the Jewish Sabbath.
As a result of the vigorous opposition which has been made against the resolution now before the Committee, Congressman Porter of Pennsylvania, chairman of the Committee, who introduced the resolution, informed Congressman Bloom, who has been leading the fight as a member of the Committee, that he would consent to strike out the preamble to the resolution containing commitment to the thirteen 28-day month year and will shortly offer this in the form of an amendment.
Congressman Bloom stated to the Jewish Daily Bulletin correspondent that he intends proposing an additional amendment, making it obligatory upon American representatives to the proposed international calendar reform conference to oppose any change in the calendar interfering with the sequence of the days of the weeks.
