The Manpower Authority of Israel’s Labor Ministry estimated today that unemployment would probably grow from an average of 33, 000 jobless last year to 51, 000 and possibly to 65, 000 if Israel’s current economic crisis continues.
The Authority said it expected Israel’s labor force would increase during the current year by 32, 000 new workers. Last year, the Authority said, 11, 400 new jobs were available. Even if that increased ratio is maintained next year, the Authority noted, 30, 000 more people will be jobless. According to other Ministry estimates, employment will continue to decline and no additional jobs will be available.
Ministry statistics showed that unemployment had affected first skilled workers and professionals, especially mechanical and chemical engineers and workers, as well as skilled workers in industry, construction and clerical occupations.
