Jewish and other so-called “minority group” workers will have serious difficulty in maintaining their status in industry when the war ends unless government, management and labor plan together now for the transition to a peacetime economy, Edward Lawson, Regional Director of the President’s Committee on Fair Employment Practice, told delegates to the Post-War Planning Conference held here during the week-end.
America cannot afford to waste the skills which these workers have gained in such trades as shipbuilding, aircraft construction, electronics and metallurgy, Mr. Lawson declared. He expressed the fear that unless the nation’s wartime non-discriminatory policies were made permanent, many industries would go back to hiring “white Christians only” as soon as manpower controls are relaxed.
