The entrance of the United States into the war has brought American and British Jewry closer together and they must now act as one body, declared Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, president of the United Palestine Appeal, speaking at a press conference this afternoon. The solution of the post-war Jewish problem “is in the hands of Britain and the United States,” he stated.
Rabbi Silver, who arrived here yesterday from New York for important conferences with British Jewish leaders, stated that Jews await the future peace with mixed emotions. “We assume political rights will be restored to Jews as to all others, but we also know that political guarantees furnish no immunity against economic and social pressure,” he said. He stressed Palestine’s capacity to absorb a million and a half Jews within the next ten or fifteen years and deplored the difficulties placed in the way of the realization of the Balfour Declaration during the last twenty years.
