A posthumous degree of doctor of humane letters was awarded here last night by Detroit University to the late Rabbi Morris Adler, spiritual leader of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Rabbi Adler died March 11, the victim of an armed attack by a demented, young member of his temple who had shot him on his pulpit in full view of a crowded synagogue.
The Very Rev, Laurence V. Britt, president of the university, lauded Dr. Adler as a clergyman who “had the breath of vision and the sense of ecumenical fellowship which we admired in Pope John XXIII.” Out of respect for the Sabbath, the university canceled its usual commencement exercises which traditionally precede the annual convocation at which Dr. Adler, along with two Christian clergymen, was honored.
