The Chief Rabbinate elections, scheduled to be held Aug. 11, will have to be postponed for at least one or two months beyond that date. The elections committee established last month to prepare for the balloting and to establish a 150-man electoral college, said today that it needed the extra time to complete its tasks. The committee is expected to ask the government to extend the terms of the incumbent chief rabbis for the required period. The only candidates for the post of Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi are the incumbent, Rabbi Yehuda Isser Unterman and Chief Rabbi Shlomo Goren of Tel Aviv.
