The importance of Dr. James B. Conant’s refusal of Ernst Hanfstaengl’s gift to Harvard in reemphasizing the duty of “the world at large” to foster “good will and freedom” was stressed by Rabbi Joseph Zeitlin of Temple Ansche Chesed, speaking yesterday over WNEW on the School of the Jewish Woman program. “If a nation permits itself to be led by one blinded by bigotry,” Rabbi Zeitlin said, “then the nation itself is equally as guilty of prejudice as its leader.
“The refusal of Dr. James B. Conant, president of Harvard University, to accept a gift from a government guilty of striking at the very principles fundamental to universities throughout the world, is an act that is worthy of the greatest commendation.”
