Prayers for Peace Offered in Synagogues in Britain

Prayers for the peace of the country were offered in all synagogues in Great Britain during the Sabbath services today.

In the sermons, the rabbis appealed to the congregations for steadiness and good will.

The Anglo-Jewish press commented on the strike situation. The Jewish “Chronicle,” referring to the strike difficulties, urges its readers to submerge all considerations to the overwhelming necessity of aiding and supporting the government in all the proper measures it may take for preventing violent breaches of law and order and preserving for the people as a whole the means of existence. It is everyone’s solemn duty to refrain from aggravating the situation, the paper states.

The “Jewish Guardian” writes that “the Jewish subjects of the Crown who are preparing to celebrate the pentacoste will support His Majesty’s Government in the present struggle for liberty with law as distinct from liberty without law.”

JEWISH COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES

More than $70,000 was raised for the United Jewish campaign in five of the smaller cities of Eastern Pennsylvania in less than one month, according to an announcement made by Albert H. Lieberman of Philadelphia. Chairman for Eastern Pennsylvania. The sum represents an increase of almost 50% over the original quota for these cities.

The cities in which the campaigns have been conducted in the course of the last month are Sunbury, Williamsport. Bristol, Coatesville and Lancaster. In every case the original quota see for the town was exceeded by a substantial margin.

Altogether it is estimated that these five cities, contain a population of 650 Jewish families making the contribution of each family over $100.

Members of the Building Committee of the Federation of Jewish Charities of Philadelphia. Pa., formulating the policies to be followed in expending the 54,000,000 subscribed to the building fund last January, announced that appropriations thus far have been made to cover the cost of constructing two new buildings for the Associated Talmed Torahs and for improvements at the Eagleville Hospital and Sanatorium.

A new dining room will be erected at the institution, together with a number of improvements such as new sewage pipes, a more adequate water supply, installation of driveways. The total amount to be spent there will be $50,000.

The Building Committee has decided that two of the six proposed new Talmud Torah Buildings which are to be used principally for educational purposes, shall be commenced as soon as feasible, according to Albert M. Greenfield, chairman.

In the building program an appropriation of $500,000 was made to cover the cost of ### five two-story community centres to contain auditoriums and class rooms.

Arrangements have been completed for the building of a synagogue and school in Monticello, N. Y., to be completed for use ### this coming summer.

The committee in charge of the development of the project have closed negotiators for the purchase of a building formerly occupied by the Masonic Lodge.
