President Bush appointed Middle East scholar Daniel Pipes to the U.S. Institute for Peace. Last Friday’s appointment of Pipes to the government think tank was taken during a congressional recess and will allow Pipes to serve without Senate approval through the end of the current congressional term, which ends in January 2005.
