President John F. Kennedy has declined to send a customary annual greeting to a conference of the American Council for Judaism to be held in New York City on May 4 and 5, it was learned today.
Council leaders had sought to solicit a message of greeting from President Kennedy prior to their anti-Zionist meeting in an attempt to add stature to the occasion. But White House authorities reviewed recent extremist activities of the Council, viewed as harmful to Israel-American relations, and also noted recent charges by the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. that the anti-Zionist group sought to “whitewash” Soviet anti-Semitism. The White House then decided to abstain from sending a message to the conference.
